Why do we celebrate the season of Lent? Historically, the practice grew out of a time of preparation for Easter observed by the ancient Christian Church. The interesting thing is, it seems to have grown from just a two day observance to the six week (40 day) celebration that we have today.
Personally, I need that time of preparation. Why? Because during those days of Lent, I have a renewed opportunity to recall our Lord’s suffering and death on my behalf. I’m able to see again firsthand all of what Jesus endured for me as a sinner. And when my attention starts to drift away, and my mind starts to wander towards other things, God’s Word helps reel me back in so that I can see again the extent of my Savior’s love for me.
When we hear the story of Christ’s passion, it’s not just a reminder of something we once learned. Nor is it just a refresher course on Jesus. Rather, it’s here that God imparts his power again and again through the gospel’s message. It’s here that he works to strengthen our faith, to comfort us with his ever present love and give us the power to live as his disciples. May the Lord continue to bless our Lenten worship as together we witness all that our Lord has done.
